Emergency Electrical Fixes: When to Reset, Replace, or Call a Pro (Based on 200+ Rush Calls)

Scenario A: Your Leviton Smart Switch Won't Reset or Is Unresponsive

I get more calls about Leviton smart switches than almost anything else—especially the 3-way dimmer models. Most of the time, the homeowner says, "I just installed it yesterday and now the light stays on even when I push the button." In my early years, I made the classic rookie mistake: I'd immediately suspect a faulty unit and start the return process. Scenario B: You Need to Know How Long a Spark Plug Lasts (and When to Swap It)

This one seems simple, but the answer depends entirely on what you're powering. When a client called me about a KTM 65 spark plug that fouled out after only 6 hours of riding, they assumed the plug was defective. Actually, the KTM 65 is a high-revving two-stroke—those plugs get carbon-fouled fast if the jetting is off. Scenario C: How Does a Portable Generator Work — and Why Won't Mine Start in the Storm?

Portable generators are simple: an engine spins an alternator to produce AC power. But "simple" doesn't mean "reliable when you need it most." During hurricane season last year, I had three calls in one weekend from clients whose generators wouldn't start. Every single one had the same root cause—they'd stored it with fuel in the carburetor for six months. The ethanol in modern gas turns to varnish in the float bowl. No amount of pulling the cord fixes that.

Here's the prevention that costs less than $20: run the generator dry every single time you use it, or add a fuel stabilizer (Sta-Bil works). If you're in an emergency right now and the generator won't start, here's your triage:

How to Figure Out Which Scenario You're In

Ask yourself one question: Did this problem appear suddenly, or has it been getting worse?

  • If the Leviton switch worked fine for a year then stopped responding after a storm, the likely culprit is a power surge or firmware glitch—not a wiring mistake. Reset and re-pair the switch before calling an electrician.
  • If your generator ran fine last month and now won't start, you've got a storage issue (old fuel) or a flooded carburetor—not a mechanical failure. Drain and clean before you panic-buy a new one.
  • If your KTM 65 is fouling plugs every 10 hours, it's probably a tuning issue, not a defective plug. Get the jetting checked by someone who knows two-strokes.
