I work the emergency order desk at an electrical supply distributor. Six years, somewhere north of 2,800 rush orders. A big chunk of them come in the 48 hours before a client's deadline—right when a punch list turns into a crisis.
What follows is the checklist I actually walk people through. Six items, roughly in the order we get the calls. If you're a facilities manager, a contractor, or the unlucky person who inherited "make sure the building is ready," this is for you.
Time to work through it: about 30 minutes for the triage, longer if parts need to ship.
Use it if you've got a hard deadline—an inspection, an opening, a tenant move-in—and the electrical or HVAC side isn't cooperating.
It is not a substitute for a licensed electrician. I'm not one. I'm a supply coordinator. I can tell you which part you probably need and how fast I can get it to you. I can't legally tell you how to install a 200-amp transfer switch, and honestly you shouldn't want me to.
With that out of the way, let's go.
Before anyone orders anything, answer one question: is the failure at the switch, at the control panel, or upstream at the supply?
This matters because the three have completely different lead times. A single-pole switch is a same-day item. A 200-amp generator transfer switch can be a 3-week backorder depending on the model. Skip this step and you'll waste the one resource you don't have.

Here's the mistake I see weekly: someone orders a Leviton single-pole switch, opens the box on-site, and realizes the wiring in the wall is a 3-way. Wrong part. Clock's ticking.

If you're staring at three blacks and a red, stop. That's a 3-way or 4-way setup. Order the right switch.
Per the National Electrical Code, switches must be rated for the load and installed per manufacturer instructions (see NEC Article 404). The Leviton single-pole diagram is the reference most installers use, and the underlying circuit hasn't meaningfully changed in decades.
One more thing: if the existing wires are backstabbed—pushed into push-in holes instead of screwed to terminals—plan on re-terminating them on the screws. Backstabs are a known failure point. Takes 90 seconds. Worth it.
Half of my rush orders in the smart-switch category happen because someone bought the wrong model and didn't find out until the faceplate was off.
The Leviton Decora Smart line reviews well for integration and build quality—that part isn't in dispute. What trips people up is the wiring requirement. Some Decora Smart models need a neutral in the box. Some don't. The box you're standing in front of decides which one you can use. Not the reviews.

Reviews won't tell you this. The spec sheet will. Read it before you hit buy.
Honest limitation: if you've got old cloth-insulated wiring or aluminum conductors, stop here and call an electrician. Smart switches and aluminum don't mix well, and that's a conversation I'm not qualified to have with you.
This is the part that breaks deadlines. Not because it's hard to spec—because it's heavy, stocked in limited quantities, and freight takes time no matter how much you pay.
When a client calls needing a 200-amp transfer switch "by Friday," my first question is always: what's the actual deadline, and what are you protecting?
A 200-amp unit is rated for a full-service whole-home setup. If you're only backing up a critical-load subpanel—fridge, furnace blower, a few circuits—you might not need 200 amps at all. A 100-amp unit or a dedicated critical-load panel does the job and ships faster.
Per NEC Article 702, transfer equipment for optional standby systems must be listed for the application and prevent inadvertent interconnection between the utility and the generator. In practical terms: no back-feeding through a dryer outlet with a suicide cord. That's how people die.
Two things that save deadlines here: order the neutral configuration correctly the first time, and confirm your service amperage before ordering. A 200-amp switch on a 150-amp service is a mismatch you'll pay to fix twice.
Sounds off-topic next to transfer switches. It isn't.
After a storm, the generator carries the building—but the small-engine gear doing the cleanup is what actually gets you back to normal. And the single most common failure is a fouled spark plug.
The Bolens BL110 has a documented plug spec—most references list a Champion RDJ7Y or an equivalent small-engine plug gapped around 0.025 in. Verify against the OEM chart for your serial number, since Bolens changed suppliers over the years.
Two field tips:
Last item. Cheapest item. Most-skipped step.
Which way does the air filter go in HVAC? The arrow on the frame points in the direction of airflow—which is toward the blower, not toward the return.
If you're not sure which way the blower is, follow the ductwork. Return air comes in one side, supply air goes out the other. The blower sits between them. Arrow points at the blower.
Getting this wrong doesn't blow up immediately. It just tanks airflow, strains the blower motor, and—if a pleated filter is installed backward—can collapse the media and push dust straight into the coil. Then your Friday deadline is a Monday service call.
Check the arrow. Every time. It takes four seconds.
A few things I've learned watching rush orders go right and wrong:
From the outside, it looks like rush orders are just about paying more for shipping. The reality is that most of these jobs succeed or fail on lead time and the first forty minutes of diagnosis—not on how much you're willing to spend.
I only see about 20% of these jobs fail on the technical side. The other 80% fail on lead time, the wrong part ordered, or someone skipping step one. Which is free to fix. If you start there.
Look, this checklist won't cover every emergency. If your building has aluminum wiring, a 3-phase service, or anything you're not 100% sure how to shut off safely—stop and get a licensed electrician on the phone. At that point, the parts aren't the problem. The risk is.
