Leviton Switch FAQ: 4 Way Switch Wiring Diagrams, WiFi Smart Switches, and Safety

Some days I'm not really writing—I'm triaging. In March 2024, a contractor called at 4:30 p.m. needing 84 Leviton switches on site by 10 a.m. the next day. 1. Is a Leviton switch really worth the money?

I made the classic rookie mistake in my first year: swapped a 'commercial grade' switch from an unknown supplier to save $60 on a whole order. Got a callback at 9 p.m. because the switch was loose in the box. Not a safety failure, but the client felt it. That doesn't mean you must buy the most expensive model for every project. It means the switch is the visible part of your work, and skimping there is a bad look.

2. Where can I find the Leviton 4 Way Switch Wiring Diagram PDF?

Right from Leviton. Go to the product page for your exact model—say the 5604-2 Decora 4-way switch—and open the Resources or Wiring Diagram tab. The PDF is the version to trust, not a random image from a forum. Leviton updates the drawings when products change, and a 4-way circuit is easy to mess up.

Quick overview: a 4-way setup needs two 3-way switches and one 4-way switch wired in the middle. The traveler wires run between the 3-way switches, and the 4-way switch interrupts them. The common terminals are the ones that matter. If you're standing there with a voltage tester and no internet, remember: the black screw on a Leviton switch is usually the common terminal. But get the PDF first. It takes two minutes and saves you the phone call I get at 10 p.m.

3. Does the Leviton WiFi smart switch need a neutral wire?

Some do, some don't. That's honestly Leviton's biggest advantage for old homes. Most smart switches need a neutral, and if your switch box only has two wires, you'd normally be stuck. Leviton's Decora Smart line includes no-neutral models for single-pole and 3-way setups. That's the answer to a lot of my emergency calls.

But don't assume 'no neutral' means 'same as every other no-neutral.' I have mixed feelings about smart switches in general. On one hand, they're great for energy reporting and scheduling. 4. Can you plug an extension cord into a surge protector?

Technically yes, but I'd rather you not turn it into a permanent setup. The order that makes electrical sense is wall outlet → surge protector → device. When you connect a long extension cord to a surge protector, you add resistance and voltage drop. A heavy load at the far end can make the extension cord warm, and the surge protector has less margin to do its job.

If you're doing this temporarily—like powering a floor scraper from a surge strip at a jobsite—use the shortest, thickest cord you have. A 12-gauge cord for anything near 15 amps, keep it fully uncoiled, and for the love of everyone's schedule, don't plug a second surge protector into the first one. NEC Article 400 treats extension cords as temporary wiring. That's not just a rule; it's why I still kick myself for not checking a 'temporary' cord in my first year. It was undersized, and it saved the outlet by melting the plug. Fortunately nothing caught fire, but that was luck.

5. What does a spark plug do? (And about that RC12LC4...)

Okay, this one always surprises me, but people ask. They see the word 'plug' and land on a switch site. A spark plug does exactly what it sounds like: it carries high voltage into the engine's combustion chamber and creates a spark across a gap. That spark ignites the fuel-air mixture. Basically, it's the switch that starts the burn.

If the spark plug is bad, you get a rough idle, misfires, or no start. If you're searching for an RC12LC4 spark plug, that code is a specific resistor-type plug with a particular heat range and reach. I'd have to look up your engine's cross-reference to say if it's right. I can wire a Leviton 4-way switch from memory, but I'm not about to guess a snowblower's spark plug. Check the manual, or use a cross-reference tool from the plug manufacturer.

6. One question I wish more people asked: Do Leviton smart switches work without Wi-Fi?

Yes, the switch still works as a switch. If you walk up and press it, it turns the light on or off. What you lose without Wi-Fi is the app control, scheduling, and voice commands. That matters because I've had customers replace a perfectly good $10 switch with a $50 smart switch and then panic when their internet provider has an outage. A smart switch is still a switch. It should work when the network doesn't.

So bottom line: buy a Leviton switch because it feels solid, install it with the correct wiring PDF, and don't overthink the internet outage part. The 'smart' part is on top of the 'switch' part, not instead of it.
