Leviton Switch: Timer, Motion Sensor, or Smart Switch — Which One Do You Actually Need?

I coordinate a lot of last-minute electrical orders. In March 2024, I had a client call at 11 a.m. with a city inspection scheduled for 8 a.m. the next day. Seven wall boxes were open, no labels, and no one could tell me which Leviton switch to order. We got through it, but only because we stopped guessing and started with the wiring.

A motion sensor is wrong there because it reacts to movement; a timer is correct because it reacts to the clock.

I went back and forth on this exact question for a restaurant. The timer was cheaper and simpler, but employees kept leaving the back door light on all night. The schedule wasn't the issue; someone had to override the timer and then forget to switch it back. We ended up going with a motion sensor. The same meter that checks a switch loop can test other things. On a commercial job, it might tell you whether the terminals on a 175 amp circuit breaker are energized before you open the panel. Off the job, it can check the resistance of a marine spark plug. The procedure is the same: meter first, touch second.

How to Decide in Three Questions

Here's the decision guide I use when I'm triaging a rush order. It takes about 60 seconds:

  1. Does the light need to respond to a person? If yes, go with the Leviton Decora motion sensor switch.
  2. Does the light need to follow a fixed schedule? If yes, go with the Leviton digital timer switch.
  3. Do you need app control, voice control, or a no-neutral solution? If yes, go with the Decora Smart line.

If the answer to all three is no, you don't need a 'smart' switch. You need a Leviton switch. Nothing wrong with that. The best switch is the one that fits the circuit and the behavior. In that order.

The Final Word: Prevention Over Cure
