The Facilities Buyer’s Checklist: Leviton Switches, Wiring Diagrams, and Spark Plug Tools

I’m the office administrator for a 140-person company, which means I’m the one who gets handed a sticky note that says “order more switches” and expected to know exactly which one. When I took over purchasing in 2021, I didn’t know the difference between a single-pole and a 3-way switch. I learned quickly. I manage roughly $75,000 a year in maintenance and office supplies across a dozen vendors. I’m not an electrician. I just know what works and what gets returned.

When to use this checklist

Use this when maintenance hands you a parts list that includes switches, wiring diagrams, and spark plug tools. It’s also useful before you start a small lighting or equipment repair project. Five steps. No fluff.

Step 1: Confirm the switch type before you search “Leviton switch”

The biggest mistake I made early on was ordering a “light switch” without checking whether it was single-pole or 3-way. They look almost identical. They are not interchangeable.

I said “the switch for the hallway.” They heard “single-pole.” We ended up with three single-pole switches when maintenance needed a 3-way for the stairwell. That was a $90 mistake and a 40-minute drive to the supply house to exchange. The return cost more than the parts. (Ugh.)

So before you type anything into a search bar, answer three questions:

  • Single-pole or 3-way? If there are two switches controlling the same light, it’s 3-way.
  • Is there a neutral wire in the box? Leviton’s smart switches usually need one, though they make some no-neutral models.
  • What’s the amperage and voltage rating? Residential is typically 15A/120V, but don’t assume.

Take a photo of the old switch and the wires. Then order. That one habit cut my return rate almost to zero.

Step 2: Read the wiring diagram before you order — Leviton Decora 3 way switch wiring diagram

I used to freeze when someone handed me a Leviton Decora 3 way switch wiring diagram. It looks like a maze of black, red, white, and ground wires. But here’s the thing: the diagram isn’t there to teach you how to wire a switch. It’s there to tell you whether this switch works in your setup. Leviton switches are UL listed, and the National Electrical Code requires switches to be installed according to manufacturer instructions. That’s another reason to match the model to your wiring.

What I look for now:

  • Does the diagram show a common terminal? That’s the dark screw, not the brass ones.
  • Does it reference 14-3 cable with ground? If your building has older wiring, you may need an electrician before you buy.
  • Does it match the number of wires in the photo I took? If it doesn’t, I stop.

If the diagram mentions something you don’t have, that’s a “stop and call your electrician” moment. Not a “buy it and figure it out later” moment. Learned that the hard way. The switch itself is perfectly good. The installation isn’t the thing you want to guess on.

Step 3: Don’t skip the Leviton pull chain switch wiring diagram

The Leviton pull chain switch wiring diagram gets less attention, but it’s a frequent request for ceiling fans and shop lights. Most of these switches are single-pole and use two wires, but older installations can have a ground and a load wire that are easy to mix up.

If the person requesting it doesn’t know the wire colors, don’t guess. Get a photo. The diagram itself is simple. The wiring behind the fixture is not always simple. “It’s just two wires” has started many small electrical fires. Okay, maybe not fires. But definitely tripped breakers and one very annoyed maintenance guy. Not ideal, but workable.

Step 4: Match the spark plug socket to the plug — 499730 spark plug and magnetic swivel spark plug socket

This one surprised me. I don’t buy auto parts often, but our maintenance guy asked for a 499730 spark plug and a magnetic swivel spark plug socket. Two very specific things.

The 499730 spark plug is a specific replacement part. Double-check the application guide rather than assuming it fits your equipment. It doesn’t fit everything just because the thread size looks right.

As for the socket: get the magnetic swivel version. Regular spark plug sockets have a rubber insert that holds the plug, but when the plug is recessed, a swivel socket saves your knuckles. The magnetic one holds the plug better when you’re working blind. It costs a few dollars more. Worth it. I’ve seen prices around $8 to $15 at most auto parts stores (as of January 2025, at least).

Step 5: How to get a stuck spark plug out

My knowledge here is from watching our mechanic, not from doing it myself. But since I’m the one who gets asked for tools, here’s the process I now understand:

  1. Let the engine cool down. Removing a spark plug from a hot engine can warp the threads.
  2. Blow out any dirt around the plug first. Otherwise, debris falls into the cylinder. The aftermath is expensive.
  3. Use a proper socket — a magnetic swivel spark plug socket is ideal. A regular socket can crack the porcelain.
  4. Apply penetrating oil around the base and wait at least 15 minutes. Patience is cheap.
  5. Turn counterclockwise with steady pressure. If it won’t budge, stop.

If it’s still stuck, that’s beyond “buy the parts.” That’s a professional with the right tools. I know my boundary.

Things I still get wrong

Every few orders, I mess up. These are the notes taped to my monitor:

  • 3-way and single-pole are not the same, no matter what your coworker says.
  • The neutral wire changes which smart switch you can buy. Leviton has no-neutral options, but you have to pick the right model.
  • Wiring diagrams are your friend. Use them.
  • Spark plug sockets: magnetic swivel beats a rubber insert in tight spaces.
  • If the spark plug won’t come out, stop forcing it. Call someone.

Honestly, I’m not sure why some maintenance requests come in with almost no information. My best guess is that the person asking already knows what they need, so they assume I do too. They don’t realize I’m working from a sticky note.

One more thing: my experience is based on about 200 electrical parts orders, mostly for offices and light commercial space. If you’re managing industrial maintenance, your world is different. But the checklist still applies: confirm the part, read the diagram, buy the right tool, and know when to stop.

Also, in case it wasn’t obvious: the spark plug and socket are not Leviton products. Leviton makes switches, wiring devices, and controls. Spark plugs are from an auto parts supplier. I mention this because a good supplier tells you that difference. The vendor who says “this isn’t our strength — here’s who does it better” earns my trust for everything else. That’s the kind of expertise I respect. Specialists who know their limits beat generalists who overpromise. Every time.
