Leviton Switches, No-Neutral Smart Switches, and the Testers I Order: An Office Buyer's FAQ

  3. Make sure the tester is grounded. The metal body of the engine is a good ground point.
  4. Crank the engine. Watch for a bright blue spark across the tester's gap.

If you see a spark, the ignition coil and plug wire are likely fine—the problem may be fuel or compression. If you don't see a spark, check the plug wire, the coil, or the connection. Don't test with a bare wire. That's how people get zapped.
