How to Wire a Leviton 3-Way Switch (Plus a 4-Way Diagram) Without Overpaying an Electrician

What You'll Need Before You Start

You can buy all of this in one trip if you're lucky. The critical parts are the switch itself, a screwdriver, wire connectors, a voltage tester, and a multimeter.

  2. Connect the two traveler wires to the two brass traveler screws on the same switch.

You need a 4-way switch when you want to control the same light from three or more locations. It sits between two 3-way switches. Here's the short version of the Leviton 4-way switch wiring diagram:

  1. The two travelers coming from the first 3-way switch connect to one pair of terminals on the 4-way.
  2. The two travelers going to the second 3-way switch connect to the other pair of terminals on the 4-way.
  3. The 4-way switch does not connect directly to the light or the power source. It just crosses the travelers over.

If the label on your switch doesn't match my description, trust the label. Terminal layouts can vary between Leviton models, and the factory diagram is the final word. A 4-way switch that is wired wrong usually shows up as a light that only works when two specific switches happen to be in the right position. That's a sign to re-check your travelers.

Step 5: How to Install Electrical Outlet While You're Already In the Wall

If you're opening up a wall to fix a switch, it's a good moment to think about whether you also need an outlet nearby. Adding a standard receptacle is not a huge job if the box has enough room and the circuit can handle it.

  1. Use an outlet box that's large enough for the number of wires. The National Electrical Code (NEC 300.15) requires all splices to be inside approved boxes.
  2. Connect the black hot wire to the brass-colored screw on the Leviton outlet.
  3. Connect the white neutral wire to the silver-colored screw.
  4. Connect the bare ground wire to the green screw.
  5. If you're installing a GFCI, identify which pair is line and which is load before you connect anything.

  • When the circuit is back on, set the meter to AC voltage and confirm you have about 120V between hot and neutral at the outlet or light fixture.

If you see 0V where you expect voltage, walk backward through the circuit. Nine times out of ten it's a loose wire nut or a traveler that landed on the wrong screw.

Signs of spark plug misfire usually include a rough idle, a flashing check-engine light, and hesitation when you press the gas. That's an engine problem, not a house wiring problem.

The same CEN-TECH multimeter can actually help with both. For spark plug wires, you can set it to resistance and compare the readings across all cylinders using your vehicle's service spec. But don't replace a Leviton switch because your car is stuttering, and don't replace spark plugs because a light fixture is flickering. I made a version of that mistake with a generator—no, an inverter—and it cost me an afternoon and a rental fee.

Cost-Cutter's Final Checklist

  • Label the common wire before you disconnect the old switch.
  • Wrap the wires around screw terminals in the correct direction, not just under the screw head.
  • Use the correct gauge wire for the breaker: 14 AWG for 15-amp circuits, 12 AWG for 20-amp circuits.
  • Don't install a 20-amp outlet on a 15-amp circuit.
  • If the box is crowded, take a breath and make fewer, cleaner connections instead of forcing everything in.

It's tempting to think every electrical job requires a licensed electrician. A straightforward 3-way switch replacement in a modern box is not always one of those jobs. But if you see aluminum wiring, damaged insulation, or something that looks like a code violation from 1974, stop and call a pro.

There's something satisfying about flipping a switch from three different locations and having all of them work on the first try. After a few hours of careful work, that click is worth more than the labor savings. Small orders, careful testing, and good diagrams are the whole trick. Measure twice, wire once, and order the switch before you cut the power.
